Description:
SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM

THE SCHOOLHOUSE MUSEUM is located on Nauset Road across from the National Seashore Visitor Center. It is housed in a one-room schoolhouse built in 1869. The original and remaining one of the three schoolhouses consolidated on that site in 1906, it served the town until 1936 when its last pupils moved to a newer building. The old building stood abandoned for many years until 1963 when the newly-formed Eastham Historical Society looked about for a place to house the town's historical treasures. The school building, then well on its way to decrepitude, was purchased, restored, and became a museum. The museum displays objects from the various facets of the town's history including farming, shipwrecks, the Life Saving Service, Native American artifacts, the school and daily life in town.

Description:
The renowned local style of wooden boat building, as practiced by its famed craftsmen in Osterville, the Crosby family, is traced through four adjoining Boat Shops. Each shop is unique in its offerings, housing full-sized boats, antique tools and boating artifacts.

The original Herbert F. Crosby boat shop, circa 1855, resides at the Museum, complete with tools and a catboat shown in mid-construction.

An adjoining shop features the Museum’s extensive collection of Crosby designed half models, used as guides for building boats, and two rare “hawk nests” designed by Oliver Hinckley, another Osterville boat builder who produced a large number of coastal schooners. A Crosby catboat, the Cayuga, is also on display.

Photographs chronicling the development of boat building in Osterville are housed in yet another shop that is home to the Sonata, a Crosby lapstrake dinghy.

The largest shop contains a Wianno Senior and a Wianno Junior, two vintage one-design local racing classes, a photo exhibit and a Vernon Coleman mural. An open shed shelters the Frances, a 1968 fully restored Crosby catboat.

Description:
Estimated to have been built around 1730 the “one- room deep” dwelling of post and beam construction offers a fascinating study in 18th and 19th century construction methods. Visitors are able to the underpinnings of the house’s earliest section ~ floor joists made from unfinished oak logs and piles of fieldstones used for supporting the chimney.

Entering the house, a period Herb Garden greets visitors at the kitchen door. The garden, maintained by the Osterville Garden Club, contains plants that are indigenous to the area and were commonly used in the 1700’s for cooking and medicinal purposes.

The interior contains a beehive oven, cooking utensils, root cellar, hooked rugs, and period furniture that provide an understanding of how early New Englanders lived.

The Osterville Historical Society, with community assistance, saved the house from demolition and moved it to its present location on the Museum grounds. In 1987 the Barnstable Historical Commission honored this thoughtful restoration with a Distinguished Service Award.

Description:
The Captain Jonathan Parker House

This historic sea captain’s home, circa 1824, contains eleven rooms of 18th and 19th century furniture, art, ceramics and glassware, including examples of locally made Sandwich and Pairpoint glass. Artwork includes paintings by Stubbs and Antoine Gibert along with several “married” portraits by an unknown American artist that are rich in intriguing details.

The Osterville Room contains artifacts, photographs and documents detailing village history. Displayed is the hand carved ivory William Blount cane, given to the town in 1871 with instructions that it “be handed down to the oldest resident” - and so it has been. The China Trade Room houses distinctive pieces carried across the seas by ship captains including pith paintings and fine examples of export china.

Upstairs, the Children’s Room surprises with a unique collection of antique dolls, toys and two dollhouses dating from 1870. The Ladies Bedroom highlights clothing, fans, hats, and embroidery.

A Colonial Garden, maintained by the Osterville Garden Club, marks the entrance to the house and provides a traditional ornamental border to the building and its lovely grounds.
